Results Report 2022

When COVID-19 emerged in early 2020, the Global Fund took swift action to fight the pandemic and protect hard-won gains against HIV, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria. With the support of our generous donors, we have since awarded more than US$4.4 billion to help countries respond to the new virus, mitigate its impact on lifesaving HIV, TB and malaria services and make urgent improvements to health systems. While we were not able to prevent COVID-19 from having a massive impact on people living in low- and middle-income countries, including both the direct impact of the new virus and the reversal of hard-won gains against HIV, TB and malaria, it could have been much worse.

We saw the benefits of the interventions we made in 2021, with gains in key programmatic results across all three diseases. The Global Fund’s Results Report 2022 details how our partnership played a critical role in supporting countries and communities to respond to the pandemic and continue the progress in the fight against HIV, TB and malaria.

The Lancet Commission on diagnostics: transforming access to diagnostics

Diagnostics are an essential part of a well functioning and high-quality health system. Yet, almost half of the global population has little or no access to diagnostics. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown acutely that diagnostic capacity in a country is directly linked to the ability to respond to the pandemic with appropriate public health measures and to monitor emerging variants. There is an urgent need to strengthen diagnostics for future pandemic preparedness but also beyond pandemics. Diagnostics are central to an accurate diagnosis of communicable and non-communicable diseases, to guide therapy, monitor progress, and assess response to treatment. The Commission puts forward recommendations to accelerate and transform access to diagnostics globally.

WHO policy brief: COVID-19 testing, 14 September 2022

Key points

  • It remains critical for national programmes to continue to offer testing for COVID-19 in line with three main objectives: reduce morbidity and mortality through linkage to prompt care and treatment, reduce onward transmission and track the evolution of the epidemic and the virus itself.
  • Testing of suspected cases early in the disease course – especially among people at increased risk for hospitalization or severe COVID-19 – enables access to supportive care and COVID-19 therapeutics.
  • Confirming COVID-19 through testing for SARS-CoV-2 followed by isolation (and follow up of relevant contacts) can reduce transmission. At the population level, fluctuations in testing data can contribute to decisions on intensifying or relaxing public health and social measures.
  • WHO continues to recommend maintaining and strengthening COVID-19 surveillance, including use of sequencing, to monitor changes in epidemiological patterns, trends in morbidity and mortality, the burden of disease on health care capacity (health and care workers, hospitalizations and intensive care unit admissions) and the evolution and circulation of variants.
